Great jacket

On spring break I took my son to the Northface store. He found a jacket he liked but not the color so I ordered it online. Needless to say he loves the jacket! He has to walk across campus and to the bus stop and from there to the med campus and anywhere else he wants to go, he doesn't have a car. Great buy!!!

I've used this for one season of single day mountaineering and alpine climbing trips and have been satisfied. It has resisted basic scrapes on rocks and breathes surprisingly well, although the pit zips are absolutely crucial, just as they would be on a GTX jacket. The hood fits perfectly over a helmet and it stays secure under the harness.

It is showing some pilling and wear at the contact points of the pack straps, especially under the arms. However it still functions fine. It kept out all the elements during one climb when the weather turned very nasty and we were forced to turn around.

The fit is perfect and i'd feel comfortable using this jacket for one season of hard use or two seasons of moderate use. It is obviously less durable than a GTX pro jacket, but it has held up to everything I've thrown at it. For the price point i think the performance is exceptional. This could be a 3-5 year jacket for a weekend warrior hiker or casual user and is more comfortable to wear around than GTX.

Light Jacket for a Wet Climate

I had my previous NF jacket replaced under warranty, excellent policy by the way, and I bought this jacket. The jackets' shell is very light but appears to repel moisture very well. It has a lot of features and the pit vents are a plus when things get hot. I am a bit judgmental on the NF Logo and Summit Series Logo. I would have liked the see the traditional stitching like on the rest of my NF stuff, instead they used some sort of screen printing which doesn't impress me much, but maybe there is some functional reason for this. The sizing does seem to run a smidgen smaller on this item especially if you want to wear a fleece layer underneath.

Material is very very soft making me wonder if this will be waterproof, and i got to try it out early and often down here in rainy Florida. Can't wait to try the x large hood over my ski helmet next year for spring skiing

I have bought NF gear since 1970 and don't even know how much I have but this is my latest acquisition. This is not a negative comment it was simply a small problem. This was the first piece of NF gear with which I had even the slightest failure. There is a wire which maintains the shape of the bill on the hood and a rubber tip was left off this or came off at some point shortly after I bought this. So the wire poked through the fabric. I sent it in and about a month later received it back fully and properly repaired at no charge for anything including shipping. They even sent me and email giving me a progress report. Great service!
The jacket performs as stated and will keep you dry in a very heavy San Francisco fog or even light rain, and you never feel any wind penetrating it. I do recommend wearing a long sleeve wicking type undershirt or T so the inside surface doesn't feel clammy against your bare arms. Overall this is a fine product as is usually the case with NF.
I also bought one for my teenage son which he has already worn many times and there hasn't been any problem or sign of wear on it.

I made my purchase at a TNF store in Eastern Washington on sale and have had it for about 7 months. The weather hasn't allowed me to use it as much as i would like but it has been a wonderful investment. My purpose for the jacket was to have a waterproof shell that can be worn any time of the year, summer rain fall to winter snow. Originally I was eyeballing a TNF GoreTex jacket and was talked into this by a sales rep based on the fabric is equivalent to GoreTex. The jacket is very lightweight and the material is thin but stretchy which is great for mobility. I can roll the jacket into it's hood, pack it down to the same size as my micro down jacket from Eddie Bauer that stuffs into it's chest pocket. The Leonidas jacket is waterproof beyond belief and blocks wind in it's tracks. While managing to stay dry, this jacket also has been able to breath well too especially with the pit zips. Down fall would be you will need to layer with this jacket in cold weather...it's designed to just keep you dry and wind off your body not help generate heat. I would recommend this jacket to anyone who is needing a rain coat at it's minimum weight and packable.
