About All Weather Jackets

In general, an all weather jacket is a versatile outer layer designed to keep you comfortable across many weather conditions including wind, rain, and changing temperatures. However, there really isn't an industry standard definition. Options that may fall within the "all weather" category include:

- Rain Shells that are waterproof and windproof with minimal insulation.

- Softshell Jackets that are breathable and water-resistant, but not waterproof. These may also offer some wind-resistance.

- Triclimates (aka 3-in-1 Jacket Systems) that include an outer waterproof shell and a removable insulating liner. They are referred to as 3-in-1 because you can wear the shell by itself, the liner by itself, or both together effectively giving you 3 jackets in 1.

Options that are not all-weather include heavy insulated coats and parkas and activity-specific styles like ski jackets with features for helmets, ski gloves, etc.

Which one you choose depends on your needs. If you like layering, opt for a rain shell that allows for multiple layer choices. If you want to keep things simple, a softshell jacket with some insulation is a better choice. If you need a jacket that can take you through multiple seasons, choose a triclimate.

Why Choose One

- Value: If you don't want to spend money on separate windbreakers, raincoats, and fall or spring jackets, opt for an all-weather style that can handle most outdoor conditions.

- Layering: Many all-weather jackets can be worn easily over most layers like t-shirts or fleece pullovers.

- Simple: Keep it simple! An all weather jacket is the answer to a lack of closet or luggage space. They're also great to stash in your car when you only need one option.

Where You Might Need An All-Weather Style

The short answer is anywhere where weather conditions can change.

Because they intended to be a versatile option, they work well for everyday use: commuting, walking the dog, family activities, and running errands. They are best in spring and fall, but can be worn in mild winter climates or on warmer winter days.

All-weather jackets are also great for travel.
