About Anoraks

An anorak is a pullover jacket designed to be worn in rainy or windy conditions. Unlike a windbreaker, an anorak does not typically have a front zipper or may only have a quarter or half zipper at most. Anoraks often have hoods (sometimes fur-lined) and may include a kangaroo pocket similar to hoodies.

The word "anorak" is derived from the Greenlandic word annoraaq which means a hooded, waterproof jacket. Introduced into the English language through polar expeditions, the term began to describe imitations of the original outerwear starting around the 1930s.

Anoraks at The North Face

A traditional anorak jacket could easily feel bulky on the trail or be too awkward to pack. This is not true when you shop at The North Face. Our styles omit the faux fur details and are typically lightweight enough to function as packable jackets. Whether you want lightweight protection for travel, hiking, commuting, or a night out by the sea, you can't go wrong with an anorak from TNF.

Anoraks are also functional athletic jackets. Slip one on before a chilly morning run to stay warm while getting in your workout. Or wear one to the gym over your workout clothes.

Layer For Extra Warmth

If you need more warmth than throwing an anorak over your t-shirt, consider starting with a fitted base layer top under your shirt. A baselayer against your skin helps promote moisture-wicking and helps trap heat. You can also add a fleece mid-layer just under your anorak. Either way, the anorak acts as the outer shell providing light protection from the elements.

FAQ

What is an anorak and how does it differ from other jackets?

An anorak is a pullover-style outer layer, typically featuring a hood and partial front zipper. Unlike full-zip jackets, anoraks offer streamlined weather protection and are designed for easy layering in changing conditions.

When should I choose an anorak for outdoor activities?

Anoraks are ideal for hiking, camping, or travel when you need lightweight weather resistance and packability. Their design helps shield against wind and light rain while allowing freedom of movement.

What features should I look for in a high-quality anorak?

Look for durable materials, adjustable hoods, secure pockets, and ventilation options. Technical fabrics can enhance breathability and water resistance, supporting comfort during active pursuits.

How do I care for my anorak to maintain its performance?

Follow the care instructions on the garment label. Generally, gentle machine washing with mild detergent and air drying helps preserve fabric integrity and technical finishes.

Are anoraks suitable for layering in colder weather?

Yes, anoraks are designed to be versatile mid or outer layers. They can be worn over base layers or under insulated jackets to adapt to varying temperatures and activity levels.
