About The North Face Men's Hats
Baseball Cap: These can be 5-panel caps or softer, unstructured caps (sometimes called dad caps). Both of these are comfortable and offer relatively good face shading in everyday conditions.
Trucker Hat: Trucker hats have a mesh back that makes them more breathable in heat.
Beanies: Beanies are a great everyday choice, but are typically worn for warmth in cool weather. Their thickness and wind-resistance can vary.
Bucket Hats: Bucket hats typically have a downward brim all around. They offer decent sun coverage but their biggest advantage is that they tend to pack well.
Boonie/Brimmed Hats: Our "brimmers" have a wider brim which offers great sun protection. Some have a chin cord. These are an excellent choice for hiking.
Cape Caps/Sunshields: These are hats with a neck cape that offers additional neck protection in strong sun.
Visors: Visors keep the head the coolest, but they offer sun protection for the face only.
Running Hat: Running caps are typically lightweight, often quick-dry, breathable, and packable.
For all-day hiking, a wide brim sun hat or sunshield is best to help protect from prolonged sun exposure. For trail running or road running, look for a lightweight running cap like our Summer LT Run Hat. For travel, check out our bucket hats. For everyday wear, our beanies and baseball caps are an excellent choice.
Sun protection is key. A hat with UPF 30-50+ is a bonus and especially great for high altitude and desert areas. Be sure to look at brim size depending on how long you plan to be outdoors and the conditions you plan to be in. For total coverage, look at a wide-brim hat.
If you plan to wear your hat during high activity (running, working out, intense hikes, climbing), look for hats with breathability built-in (mesh panels, vent ports) and moisture-wicking materials.
The hat should be fitted or have an adjustable closure. Chin straps are essential in windy conditions. For wearing under a helmet, look for lower-profile headwear.
