All your outdoor hat questions, answered
Whether you’re relaxing by the campfire or keeping cool in the blistering heat, nothing beats a reliable hat. But which styles are best for which conditions? And how can you tell if a hat will provide the protection you need?
If you have similar questions, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s look at some of the most commonly asked questions about hats.
What are the different types of outdoor hats?
Headwear comes in a variety of styles depending on intended use. When it comes to outdoor activities, there are a few main categories to consider:
Beanies
Beanies are brimless hats that are a quintessential winter accessory, but can be worn throughout any season. Types of beanies include slouchy styles, fisherman beanies, pom pom beanies and skull caps.
Baseball Caps
A baseball cap is a soft hat with a rounded crown and a stiff bill. These are extremely versatile, perfect for everything from running errands to exploring the local trails.
Trucker Hats
Truckers are baseball caps with a mesh back. The mesh helps make this style of headwear more breathable.
Bucket Hats
Bucket hats are soft with a wide brim that slopes downward in a way that makes the hat resemble an inverted bucket. Some bucket hats are reversible.
Brimmed Hats or Boonie Hats
Wide-brimmed hats (sometimes called brimmers or boonie hats) are also soft hats, but unlike bucket hats, they have an extended brim that helps better minimize exposure to the sun. These are ideal for exploring on sunny days.
Visors
Visors are hats that shade your face from the sun, but have no crown. That makes these hats highly breathable and a great choice for running or hiking. Keep in mind, however, that the top of your head will be exposed to the sun.
What to look for in a summer hat
The best summer hats help protect you from the sun’s rays while keeping you comfortable. Look for hats that offer decent coverage and provide enough shade for your face if you plan to spend a long day outdoors. Some hats even come with a sun shield designed for extra sun protection for your neck.
It’s also important to look for breathable materials and sweat-wicking technology like FLASHDRY™. Our Class V hats are available with both FLASHDRY™ and UPF protection.
Hats with plenty of ventilation can also be more comfortable in hot summer weather. Consider trucker hats with mesh panels for extra breathability. Be aware that the sun’s UV rays can penetrate this material, so sunscreen may still be necessary.
What to look for in a winter hat
Unlike summer hats where ventilation is key, winter hats are mainly about warmth. In addition to comfort, style and durability, it’s important to consider material. Hats made from wool or fleece are ideal for helping retain heat when the temperatures drop. Beanies (with or without a pom) are great for winter activities like skiing, snowboarding and sledding because they fit close to the head and don’t get in the way. If you plan to be outdoors for long periods of time, consider pairing your hat with a balaclava to help keep your face protected from the elements.
