Once you've decided on a style, it's important to consider the level of waterproofing in a raincoat.  Many men's rain jackets have a durable water-repellent (DWR) coating, but water-resistant is not the same as waterproof.  Water resistant raincoats can handle light rain, but if the precipitation continues, grows stronger, or starts falling sideways, they aren't as effective at keeping moisture out.  Waterproof jackets, on the other hand, are designed with features that help keep as much moisture out as possible including taped seams and pit zips.

While windbreakers are a tempting choice for a lightweight rain jacket or rain shell, they tend to be designed to be more windproof than water-resistant.  While some may help keep moisture out, they are not intended to keep you dry in a serious downpour.
