While people may use the words interchangeably, winter boots are not the same as snow boots. Snow boots are waterproof, often rise higher on the leg to protect from cold, and have a bottom made from rubber that can easily be rinsed off. They are ideal for tackling not only powder, but also heavy, muddy, and deep snow. People who should consider wearing snow boots include skiers, construction and road workers, snow plow operators, and anyone who spends a good amount of time outside in snow and sleet.
Winter boot, on the other hand, is a general term referring to footwear worn in winter that may lack the snow-protection features of snow boots. Most winter boots are insulated, but may be only water-repellant vs. waterproof. The opening may sit lower on the leg (closer to the foot) and may not be designed to keep snow out, requiring a separate gaiter if snowproofing is important. Winter boots are ideal for people navigating well-maintained roads like in the city.
The following are signs you need to replace your boots:
• Worn-out sole: If the tread is worn on the sole, a boot will have less (or no) traction on packed snow and ice.
• Tears and holes: Tears and holes not only let in cold, but also water. It's a good idea to replace your boots if they have tears and holes to avoid dangerous conditions such as frostbite.
• Worn-out insole: After long periods of use, a boot's insole can become pressed and will provide less support for the foot.
As a general rule, boots should be replaced every 2-3 years depending on how much they are used.
All-day comfort is also critical to the design of the best winter shoes for men. That’s why footwear from our range, like the Men’s Back-To-Berkeley IV Textile Waterproof Boots, blends a variety of ergonomic, warmth-promoting components.
These components include a compression-molded TPU heel clip, which enhances the pairs’ stability, while a padded tongue ensures comfort across the top of the foot. This comfort extends across the sole of the foot with a molded-EVA midsole and a SURFACE CTRL™ rubber outsole, which adapts to various surfaces and conditions with ease.
