What is the difference between water repellent and waterproof?

Water-repellent, water-resistant, and waterproof all describe different levels of protection from rain and spray. Water-resistant is the lowest level. A water-resistant jacket can resist water sometimes, but not every time. Water-repellent construction repels water most of the time. The best protection is a waterproof jacket, which fully protects against downpours and drenching rain.
