When shopping for backpacks, pay careful attention to the following:

• Comfort:  Look for adjustable and padded shoulder straps and a cushioned back panel.  If you are looking at technical packs, hip belts can be helpful for better weight distribution and comfort.

   

• Size/Capacity:  Choose a size that fits your needs.  If you typically enjoy short hikes or need something packable and light for travel, you probably don't need that 50L or 60L pack.  

   

• Organization:  Do you typically carry a laptop?  Look for backpacks with laptop sleeves.  Do you carry a lot of smaller items?  Look for backpacks with lots of pockets or internal organization.

   

• Reflective Elements:  Are you a college student that may be out in low light?  Reflective elements can help you stay seen as day turns to night.

   

• Water Resistance:  Nylon and polyester are great materials that can help with weather-resistance.  If you truly need more protection from the elements, consider a rain cover.

Think about what you carry most often.  If you tend to carry just the basics, a smaller pack will do.  If you need a backpack for school, commuting, travel, or hiking/backpacking, consider a larger pack.  

Pay attention to the sizes listed (given in liters).  Here is a general guideline:

• Everyday Backpack (10-20L):  Best for just the essentials like wallet, keys, and water bottle

   

• Elementary-Middle School (18-26L):  Great for carrying folders, lunch, a water bottle, a few books, and a smaller computer

   

• High School-College and Commuting (20-32L):  Can typically hold a laptop, notebook, lunch, headphones, and smaller accessories

   

• Day hiking (15-35L):  For water, snacks, a light shell layer, first aid, and small items

   

• Multi-day backpacking (40-70L):  For more than just day hiking needs.  May hold a sleep system, clothing, food.

   

• Travel (20-45L):  May hold clothes, toiletries, shoes, travel documents, and some tech.

We do not recommend fully submerging our backpacks in water. The use of bleach or irons during cleaning can also damage them. The best way to clean our backpacks is to spot clean using a damp cloth and let them air dry.

Most are water-resistant (with a non-PFC durable water-repellent finish), not fully waterproof. Please refer to each backpack's product page for specific information.

Yes. You'll find The North Face backpacks on school campuses across the country.  Features like laptop compartments, water bottle pockets, and suspension systems make them well-suited for all-day carry.
