About Backpacks at The North Face
The North Face is a leader in outdoor apparel and equipment because we do a lot of things well. But we have to say, there is something special about The North Face backpacks. We’ve been churning out classic models for decades, and we’re not stopping. So if you want a backpack with the latest designs or a tour down memory lane with the best materials and craftsmanship, you’ve come to the right place.
Whether you've been on the mountain or out around town, it's likely you've seen (or even owned) one of our best-sellers like the Borealis, Jester, Recon, or Surge. But if this is your first time shopping our packs, you'll soon discover that we not only offer rugged, trail-ready styles for hiking, but also travel packs, kids' backpacks, school bags, commuter backpacks, and more.
Backpacks can be truly versatile. Styles like our Borealis and Jester are not only popular choices for high school and college, but can double as daypacks for outdoor adventures. Multiple pockets including water bottle pockets come in handy when you need to carry a lot of stuff but want to keep your hands free (especially when you are riding a bike or navigating public transportation).
The 25-year legacy of the Borealis Backpack, in particular, speaks well for itself. Choose from our variety of colors and relax in its FlexVent™ suspension system, certified by the American Chiropractic Association. These comfortable designs are sealed with iconic style and functional, cool-looking bungee cords. And don’t worry - there’s a laptop sleeve. So shop for yours today.
Of course if you are looking for something built for adventure, we offer technical packs like our Trail Lite series. These packs are full of features designed to maximize access to the gear you need during your hike but also distribute weight comfortably.
When shopping for backpacks, pay careful attention to the following:
Comfort: Look for adjustable and padded shoulder straps and a cushioned back panel. If you are looking at technical packs, hip belts can be helpful for better weight distribution and comfort.
Size/Capacity: Choose a size that fits your needs. If you typically enjoy short hikes or need something packable and light for travel, you probably don't need that 50L or 60L pack.
Organization: Do you typically carry a laptop? Look for backpacks with laptop sleeves. Do you carry a lot of smaller items? Look for backpacks with lots of pockets or internal organization.
Reflective Elements: Are you a college student that may be out in low light? Reflective elements can help you stay seen as day turns to night.
Water Resistance: Nylon and polyester are great materials that can help with weather-resistance. If you truly need more protection from the elements, consider a rain cover.
Style: In addition to amazing features, a backpack should catch your eye because of how it looks. Whether you want a striking pattern like those offered in the Jester and Borealis or you prefer the sleek, simplicity of a black backpack, you're sure to find something you'll love at The North Face.
If you're looking for a bag but you're not sure a backpack is what you need, we also offer messenger bags, totes, and other everyday bags.
Whether it’s commuter backpacks, toddler and kid-sized backpacks, or simple go-packs for day outings, The North Face backpack ethos is simple: we want you to be prepared, comfortable, and looking great for any adventures.
Need additional equipment for more extended travel? Complement your backpack with soft-sided travel bags as well as rolling duffles and wheeled luggage to get you cruising through the airport. Match it all up with a cohesive, modern look. Our designs are always comfortable and organized.
We love the outdoors like you do, but we know that backpacks need to do more than carry apples, trail mix, and sandwiches. That’s why you’ll find laptop sleeves and water bottle pockets on our best models. Shop for The North Face backpack that meets your needs and helps you enjoy life to the fullest.
FAQs
Think about what you carry most often. If you tend to carry just the basics, a smaller pack will do. If you need a backpack for school, commuting, travel, or hiking/backpacking, consider a larger pack.
Pay attention to the sizes listed (given in liters). Here is a general guideline:
Everyday Backpack (10-20L): Best for just the essentials like wallet, keys, and water bottle
Elementary-Middle School (18-26L): Great for carrying folders, lunch, a water bottle, a few books, and a smaller computer
High School-College and Commuting (20-32L): Can typically hold a laptop, notebook, lunch, headphones, and smaller accessories
Day hiking (15-35L): For water, snacks, a light shell layer, first aid, and small items
Multi-day backpacking (40-70L): For more than just day hiking needs. May hold a sleep system, clothing, food.
Travel (20-45L): May hold clothes, toiletries, shoes, travel documents, and some tech.
We do not recommend fully submerging our backpacks in water. The use of bleach or irons during cleaning can also damage them. The best way to clean our backpacks is to spot clean using a damp cloth and let them air dry.
Most are water-resistant (with a non-PFC durable water-repellent finish), not fully waterproof. Please refer to each backpack's product page for specific information.
