When shopping for a kids' backpack, look for:
Shoulder straps (preferably padded) that sit comfortably without sliding off
A backpack that doesn't hang too far below the lower back
A size proportional to your child's torso, not their age
A design that is lightweight before anything is packed inside
An easy-to-grab top handle
A padded back panel for added comfort
Kids are also rough on backpacks, so consider the durability of the backpack. Strong zippers, a reinforced bottom, tough fabric, and water-resistance are all great features for everyday school use.
Backpack sizes are described in liters. While there are no strict guidelines for backpack sizes for kids (because kids come in all shapes and sizes), typically we see younger elementary kids using bags between 12 and 18 liters and older elementary school kids using packs 16 to 22 liters. You likely want to avoid adult-sized packs which are typically 25 liters and above.
If your kid is older than elementary school, we do offer some great options for middle school backpacks which typically range from 20-26 liters. However, if your child tends to carry lots of books a laptop, you might consider a high school sized backpack between 24 and 32 liters.
