About Masks, Balaclavas, and Gaiters

Balaclavas and neck gaiters are a common sight not only on the ski slopes, but also in the outdoors in general during the winter. From surviving a blustery commute to pushing the snowblower, these accessories come in handy to help keep out moisture and biting wind. They're even handy to have when conditions are cold but not necessarily snowy - like for an early morning trail run, hike, or fishing trip.

Balaclavas are a close-fitting head covering that protects the head, face, neck, and often all but the eyes. They offer maximum coverage and fit comfortably under helmets for skiing, cycling, and climbing. Neck gaiters, on the other hand, are essentially a tube of fabric worn around the neck. When pulled up, they can cover the chin, mouth, ears, and sometimes the nose. They are more versatile than balaclavas, able to be adjusted quickly in changing weather and worn multiple ways (as a neck warmer, face covering, or headband).

At The North Face, we not only offer balaclavas and neck gaiters separately, but we sometimes incorporate these face coverings into our outerwear. Our NSE Full Zip Mask Fleece, for example, is essentially a "balaclava fleece", offering a hood and stowable mask. Similarly, our NSE Hooded Mask Jacket features a moisture-managing mask that can be stowed when not in use.
