5 camping essentials for every climate

Whether you’re a first-time camper or a seasoned expert, having the right gear makes all the difference. We’re here to make sure you’ve got everything you need for your next camping trip without overpacking, from absolute must-haves to just-in-case accessories. 

1. Tent 

Unless you’re a minimalist backpacker or seasoned summer lightweight, the first thing you’ll need on any camping trip is a decent tent. When choosing one, consider how easy it is to assemble. You might be setting up camp in poor lighting or when you’re tired after a long day on the trail, so the simpler it is to do, the better. 

Although there are affordable tents on the market, we suggest investing in quality materials that will last. If you enjoy long expeditions on high-altitude mountains, it’s worth spending more on a robust tent that can deliver under extreme weather conditions. If you’re more of a casual camper, a less expensive but equally durable model will do. 

Tip: Increase comfort and protect your tent from damp soil with a ground sheet or footprint. 

2. Sleeping bag  

When choosing a sleeping bag, make sure you check the temperature rating. Consider the climate where you plan to do most of your camping and look at how cold it can get at night and choose one rated accordingly. Then check the insulation type. Down fill offers a superior warmth-to-weight ratio and is a good choice in dry environments, while synthetic fill is more reliable in wet ones. 

Sleeping bags generally come in three shapes: rectangular (loose and spacious), mummy style (packable and efficient) or tapered rectangular (a combination of the two). You can also get double sleeping bags. 

Tip: Sleeping bag liners are a great way to prolong the life of your sleeping bag and minimize the need for cleaning. 

3. Pack 

No matter the weather, a durable and versatile gear bag should always be on your list of camping essentials. If you plan on trekking, a backpacking pack is a must.  

When choosing a backpack or gear bag, look at the volume it can hold. Keep an eye out for extra compartments, bungee cords, and gear loops for easy access to camping essentials. 

Tip: Look for durable and water-resistant materials that are easy to wipe down and clean.  

4. Clothing 

It’s good to expect the unexpected when camping, but packing countless outfits is impractical. When choosing your camping clothes, look for items that are versatile and multipurpose. Bring layers that can be added or removed with ease and invest in durable materials. Moisture-wicking fabric will help keep you comfortable and dry in both cold and warm weather. 

Tip: A beanie is a small, lightweight and super-warm item that can make a big difference around camp. Same with an extra pair of socks. 

5. Gear organizers

Smaller travel packs and gear boxes are a smart way to keep your toiletries and small accessories oraganized and together for easy access and transportability. Some are even designed to stack on top of each other—a great space-saver in a small tent.
