New RENEWED Design Residency Program Educates Design Team on Principles of Circularity and Results in Custom, One-of-a-Kind Products for Auction
As we look to the next 50 years of exploration and work to better protect the planet we love, we are always looking for ways to increase the sustainability of our products and reduce our impact on the earth, without compromising the quality and performance customers have come to expect from us.
This is why we launched our Renewed collection in 2018, so that damaged or returned products can be refurbished and have a second life – ready for the next adventure. Now, we’re taking what we’ve learned about sustainable design and expanding our commitment to circularity through an all new Renewed Design Residency.
The Renewed collection was developed with the intention of keeping textiles out of landfills and in the value chain, and since our launch the program has done just by diverting more than 200,000 pounds of clothing from landfills. After almost two years of refurbishing clothing through our Renewed program, we asked ourselves how we could make this impact even greater.
The answer was our Renewed Design Residency program, a bi-annual, one-week intensive workshop that will equip rotating groups of The North Face designers with strategies and techniques to embed the principles of circularity and creative repair into their work. As these designers put their learnings to use, sustainable creation will be incorporated into more and more of The North Face products, meaning that customers can help protect the environment while exploring it.
As part of the Design Residency, designers will also create custom, limited edition pieces from clothing that was previously thought to be irreparable. Four of these bespoke items from the first Design Residency, held at The Renewal Workshop back in October 2019, will be available for auction starting February 5th, 2020 on thenorthfacerenewed.com, and over 70 one-of-a-kind renewed products with visible repairs will be available for online purchase. 100% of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to The North Face Explore Fund, our foundation established in 2010, specifically benefitting non-profit environmental organizations that support our love of wild places.
“The fashion industry is known to be one of the world’s largest polluters, and as clothing designers, this is something that we grapple with in our day-to-day work,” said Kellen Hennessy Senior Designer for The North Face who participated in the inaugural Residency program. “The Renewed Design Residency was a challenging opportunity for us to reconsider the way we work and learn techniques for creating product with longevity, repairability and circularity in mind."
