Already on my second pair, first pair went through one 50 and one 100 miler... and while still wearable, holes formed after the first month of use, first barely visible, now big enough to allow pebbles in while running.

Extremely comfortable, great grip and breathability, zero blisters due to their great fit. These are, hands down, the best trail running shoes I've ever worn, but yes, way to fragile on the sides (the breathable fabric seems to be too easy to wear and tear when exposed to friction). Second pair started to show first holes after only 100 miles of easy runs on them. Took them to the beach and run for 2 miles in a rocky place - enough to seriously wear the tissue.

TNF needs to improve this product. Already discussed it with the folks at the shops. Lastly, I saw a pair on sale today at the TNF here in Antwerp... sorely had to turn it down, as I know I love them but TNF needs to improve their durability before purchasing another pair!

Hope this helps to make your mind before buying.

I first purchased the Ultra Trail shoes a couple months ago as my weekend hiking shoes. I live in Los Angeles, where the trails are basically dirt paths, not the salt flats of Bolivia nor the treacherous hikes of Himalayas.

However, holes started developing in the fabric where the toe box meets the arch after a few of 1-5 mile hikes. Because this started happening so soon after my purchase, the retailer allowed me to exchange my shoes.

After receiving my second pair of shoes, I broke them in on a hiking trip through some sand caves and a couple 30 min walks along the California coast. Then, on a recent trip to Egypt, the holes began happening developing after day 5. I noticed them while going up the stairs to the pyramid. All of my tours had children running around and retired couples lining up to see mummies. None of them strenuous enough to be even considered for a cross fit or trail run session.

I looked up online for people with the same problems. On multiple review websites, people were having the same issues as I am. I really didn??t see how this pair of shoes could possibly stand the ???Trail Running?? that it is billed for if it cannot stand up to a few trail walks. This led me to conclude that this is a manufacturer??s defect.

Also, the padding on these shoes were minimal and felt a bit uneven between my right and left feet. I ended up switching the insoles to some Dr. Scholls, which I've never had to do with any Asics. I also have wide feet, and these shoes run rather large compared to other athletic running shoes.

Time to see what TNF warranty dept will do.

Comments about TheNorthFace MEN’S ULTRA TRAIL:

I've been buying North Face trail running shoes since they started offering them in the '90s and have a love/hate relationship with them. Every few years, TNF will release an incredible shoe only to quickly remove it from the market. I've learned my lesson and always go back and buy a second (or third) pair when they're on a good cycle.

I just ordered my second pair of these shoes after wearing down my first pair (hiking and 1/2 marathon training/race).

Overall, these are probably the most comfortable and functional running shoes I've ever owned (and I've owned many across all brands). The grip is solid and the shoes fit like a glove. While I primarily used them on the road, when I did hit trails I felt secure and confident in every step. They're also grippy enough for light bouldering and scrambling.

The only downside is the same one everyone else mentions: the mesh wears down way too quickly. I had a few holes form the first few weeks I owned them. One of the holes finally grew to be big enough to impact the fit. If it wasn't for that hole, I'd wouldn't have needed to replace them. Other than the mesh, everything else held up to all the abuse.

For TNF: keep making minimalist shoes like these but put a little more effort into durability.

I have been trail running with The North Face shoes for about 2 years now. I am in love with the brand but this shoes are the worst ever. They showed wear after the first uses. Mesh ripped completely before a month passed. They have got a great sole with lots of traction but everything else is low quality.

Comments about TheNorthFace MEN’S ULTRA TRAIL:

Great shoe! I had lost confidence in North Face and their running shoes. But I am back because of this shoe. I first started using the shoe in the hills and mountains of Las Vegas where the ground is hard and the rocks sharp. The shoe held up and the cushion and support felt almost like the old single track. I then took them to the Philippines to run in a 50K trail race in the mountains of Tanay. There was rock climbing, mud sliding, river crossings and muddy roads. The shoe did great. I love the fact the shoe did not feel heavy or squishy. I hope North Face stays with this design for awhile.

Comments about TheNorthFace MEN’S ULTRA TRAIL:

I have narrow feet and have a hard time finding good fitting running shoes. The Ultra series has solved this for me. The trail shoes are light weight but durable. I have not torn the shoe yet and am on my second pair. I just wish the rubber soles were more wear resistant but this is problem with all manufacturers, Vibram or not. I always wear out the inside of my soles near the heel before the rest of the shoe or soles wear out. I can still hear my Mom telling me to pick up my feet.

I do love this shoe. The tread is awesome, the fit is great, but the lifespan is terrible. I'm lucky to get 250km out of these before the inner sides blow out or the lower lace eyes rip through. I'm hoping next year's model addresses these issues.

I'm a 10.5 and this particular shoe is too long for my foot which is unusual. I'll need to exchange them for a 10 and see how they fit. Careful with the size.
