Learn More About Hiking Pants
Whether you're into scrambling over rocky trails or exploring scenic paths, we've got hiking pants at The North Face to help make your next adventure a comfortable one. After all, a good pair of pants can be the difference between a fun experience and a miserable one. But what makes a "good pair"? Keep reading to learn more about hiking bottoms.
Weather Protection: Before choosing a pair of hiking pants, consider the weather conditions you will most likely encounter. If you prefer to hike in warm temperatures, breathability is key. For an unexpected drizzle, look for pants like our Men's Lightstride Pants with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish that causes water to bead up and roll off. While the pant may not be truly waterproof for downpours, this water-repellency will help in light rain. Wind resistance is also helpful particularly in spring and fall and along ridgelines. If winter hiking is your style, look for insulated pants or pants with a fleece lining for added warmth (note that these may be less breathable).
Convertible Feature: Hiking throughout the day may mean variable weather conditions. For cooler temperatures in the morning, pants may work well. However, as temperatures rise during the day, you may find you wish you had worn shorts. The convertible pant is the solution to this dilemma. These feature zip-off legs that let you go from wearing pants to shorts in seconds. Just stow the legs in your backpack and be on your way. Our Basin Convertible Pants in both men's and women's styles are a favorite.
Mobility Options: Particularly for those who love scrambling and bouldering, features like stretchy materials, articulated knees, and gussets are a must. Also look for hem cinches, snaps, and tapered ankles to keep fabric out of mud and equipment. Our Summit Series Off Width Pants, while designed for climbing, are also an excellent option for advanced hikes thanks to their cinched hems, crotch gusset, and articulated knees.
Moisture Management: Use of quick drying materials is key not only in case your pants get wet, but also to help wick away sweat as you move. Many of our hiking pants feature FLASHDRY™ technology to keep you comfortable as you reach new peaks.
Durability: Durable fabrics and features like extra protection in the knees can make hiking pants last longer than typical everyday styles. Our Men's Basin Pro Pants, for example, have woven overlays on the knees.
Pants are best when you may encounter brush, thorns, poison ivy/oak, and ticks and other bugs. Pants also offer more protection in strong sun and against rough rock. Shorts, however, are best for trail running, clear trails, and hot/humid weather.
Sure, but regular "everyday" pants sometimes let you down on the trail. Jeans, for example, can feel heavy over time and can chafe. They also stay wet longer when they get wet. Everyday pants also may restrict movement more and may not have the pockets you wish they did.
Think layers!
For warm weather, you'll likely wear fewer layers. A lightweight short-sleeve t-shirt or a sun hoodie is an excellent option with pants. If you think weather conditions may change as you explore, pack a windbreaker or lightweight rain shell in your backpack.
For cooler temperatures, consider a baselayer like a long-sleeve shirt with a light fleece over the top.
Two rules to remember:
If you are comfortable standing still at the trailhead, you may be too warm once you start moving. It's better to start cooler and add layers.
Avoid bulky tops like hoodies that are heavy when damp and are slow to dry.
Don't forget accessories like a good pair of hiking socks and a hat and sunglasses.
