Breaking in your new hiking boots

2025-03-18

Whether you’ve already got a pair of durable hiking boots or are still searching for the perfect pair, knowing how to break in your hiking boots can mean the difference between hiker heaven and painful blisters. We’ve put together a guide to breaking in hiking boots so that you can enjoy exploring new trails without missing a step.

How to break in hiking boots.

Footwear technology has advanced a lot in recent decades, so breaking in your hiking boots is easier than ever. That being said, there are still some dos and don’ts that can expediate the process.

Don’t overdo it: Take it slow with your new hiking boots.

You wouldn’t wear your new running shoes for the first time on marathon day, so it’s not the best idea to break in your hiking boots on a big expedition. If you’ve bought a new pair of boots for an upcoming multi-day expedition, wear them for at least a handful of shorter hikes first.

Do wear your boots around the house.

This is an easy way to break in hiking boots without putting your feet through the wringer. You’ll get a better feel for the boots and get your feet used to being in them for long periods. This is also a great way to find out if they’re the right fit for your feet. If they’re not, you should still be able to return them as long as you haven’t gone outside.

Don’t forget about socks.

To avoid chafing, opt for crew socks and higher cuts. Wearing liner socks underneath your hiking socks can also help minimize blisters.

Do try different boot-lacing techniques.

There’s no one-size-fits-all with hiking boots and the same goes for lacing techniques. For example, the surgeon’s knot technique provides extra support and stability around the ankles, while the window lacing technique is great for those who experience pain or pressure around the middle or top of the foot. Read more about how different boot-lacing techniques could transform how your boots feel on your feet and help you perform better on the trail.
