FAQ
Start with your route, expected weather and time on the trail. Build your packing list around clothing layers, food, water and a backpack. Then add items for planned stops, such as a compact seat pad, camera or extra top. Keep frequently used items easy to reach.
Choose clothing that lets you move comfortably, including a base layer, hiking pants or shorts, and socks suited to your footwear. Add a fleece or another warm layer for cooler conditions. Check the forecast and the stated features of any outer layer you plan to bring.
Place heavier items close to your back and keep the load balanced from side to side. Pack clothing for later use toward the bottom, with snacks and an extra layer within easy reach. Use separate pouches for small accessories, and keep damp items apart from dry clothing.
A hat, beanie or gloves can round out your clothing choices for the conditions. A small pouch helps keep keys and other loose items together. Consider a camera for trail photos and a compact bag for carrying out wrappers and other rubbish.
An overnight trip adds sleeping and camp equipment to your day-hike packing list. Bring a tent or planned shelter, sleeping bag, sleeping pad and clothing for camp. If you intend to cook, include cooking equipment, utensils and meals, taking campsite facilities and local rules into account.
