Waterproof and water-resistant jackets are different in their construction and capabilities. Water-resistant jackets are ideal for light drizzles and short commutes, using a surface coating that makes water bead up and roll off. However, if you are heading into continuous heavy rain, you need a fully waterproof jacket. If you are expecting heavy rain or severe storms, a waterproof hard shell coat is the superior choice. Hard shells are fully waterproof, windproof and designed to act as an impenetrable outer layer over your fleece or mid-layers. Soft shells are fantastic for light showers and active adventures because they are stretchier and softer, but they are generally only water-resistant rather than fully waterproof.

Turn your jacket inside out and close all zips and Velcro® fasteners. Then, wash it on a gentle washing machine cycle at 40°C or less. We recommend using a detergent designed for waterproof and technical gear or a mild powder detergent. To reproof your jacket, use a spray-on or wash-in product following the manufacturer’s instructions.
