Women's Insulated & Down
Insulated jackets are a popular choice for staying warm in cold weather. They come in various styles and types, with down jackets being a popular subset. Down jackets are known for their exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio and are often preferred for their compressibility, making them easy to pack.
Types of Winter Coat Insulation
Down Insulation: Down jackets use the soft under-feathers of ducks or geese. Goose down insulated coats are highly regarded for their warmth and lightweight nature. The insulating power of down is measured using a fill power rating, which indicates the volume that one ounce of down occupies in cubic inches. Higher fill power indicates better insulation. Common fill powers range from 550 to 900.
Synthetic Insulation: These winter jackets use man-made fibers, such as polyester, to mimic the properties of natural down. Synthetic insulation performs better when wet compared to down and is often hypoallergenic. However, it's generally slightly heavier and less compressible.
Parkas and Puffers
You'll find more than classic winter coat styles in our insulated section. We also carry a variety of longer styles (parkas) and puffer jackets (bubble coats). Insulated parkas provide additional coverage and warmth because they extend below the hips. Puffers, like our Nuptse collection, are characterized by their quilted appearance and tend to be lightweight. They are a trendy choice for cool weather.
Layering with Women's Winter Jackets
Layering is crucial for staying warm while allowing flexibility in adapting to changing temperatures. When layering with an insulated jacket, consider its thickness. Thinner winter coats are better for mid-layers, while bulkier ones can be outer layers.
- Base Layer: The first layer should wick moisture away from the skin. Merino wool or synthetic materials are common choices.
- Mid-Layer: An insulated jacket can serve as a mid-layer. Down or synthetic jackets provide the necessary warmth.
- Optional Outer Layer: This layer shields you from wind, rain, and snow. It can be a waterproof and breathable shell jacket.
