The Complete GORE-TEX Buying Guide

The Complete
GORE-TEX Buying
Guide:
Jackets,
Footwear & Trousers

GORE-TEX is one of the most recognised names in waterproof performance - and one of the most misunderstood. The label covers a family of technologies, each built for different demands. Choosing the wrong one doesn’t mean you’ll get wet. It means you’ll overheat, carry unnecessary weight, or spend more than you need to.

This guide helps you find the right GORE-TEX gear for what you actually do.

The Complete GORE-TEX Buying Guide

What Is GORE-TEX?

GORE-TEX is a breathable and waterproof membrane that is made from expanded polytetrafluoroethylene - ePTFE. Laminated between an outer fabric and an inner lining, it blocks water from passing through while allowing sweat to escape. That’s what separates GORE-TEX from a simple waterproof coating.

A DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish sits on top of the outer fabric, causing water to bead and run off rather than saturate it. DWR preserves breathability but isn't the waterproofing itself - that’s the membrane’s job. When a GORE-TEX garment starts to feel less breathable, a worn DWR finish is usually the reason. Tumble drying on low heat reactivates it.

What Are the Different Types of GORE-TEX?

The GORE-TEX range covers five distinct technologies. Each suits different activities and conditions.

GORE-TEX 2L

This type bonds the membrane to an outer fabric, with a separate inner lining hanging loose. It’s the most common and versatile construction and is well-suited to everyday and moderate outdoor use.

GORE-TEX 2L tends to feel softer against the skin than 3L, and costs less. However, it does come with a small amount of extra weight and bulk from the loose lining.

GORE-TEX 3L

This type bonds the outer fabric, membrane, and inner backer into a single unit, eliminating the loose lining. The result is a lighter, more packable garment that moves more easily under load and breathes more efficiently.

GORE-TEX 3L is a higher-investment option, best suited to users who need lighter weight, better packability and stronger performance during technical or high-output activities

GORE-TEX Pro

GORE-TEX Pro is designed for alpine athletes, mountain professionals and users facing prolonged exposure to demanding weather conditions. It uses the most robust fabrics available for the most demanding conditions.

GORE-TEX Paclite

This variant strips the construction back to its minimum. It’s a lightweight 2.5L build with a protective backer on the membrane rather than a full inner lining. It's the most packable GORE-TEX option, suited to fast-and-light hiking and trail running.

GORE-TEX Infinium

This is the outlier in the range, as it’s not a waterproof product. Infinium uses GORE’s membrane technology for wind resistance and water repellency. It is not a substitute for a waterproof jacket.

How to Choose a GORE-TEX Jacket

The right GORE-TEX jacket depends on your activity level, weather conditions and the balance you need between protection, breathability and packability.

The Complete GORE-TEX Buying Guide

For everyday use and hiking

GORE-TEX 2L covers the conditions most people encounter. It’s waterproof, breathable, and durable enough for regular use without the cost of a 3L or Pro build.

For technical mountaineering and alpine use

3L or Pro construction is worth the investment. The GORE-TEX Mountain Jacket is TNF’s most iconic shell and has been in continuous production since 1985. It uses GORE-TEX Pro and remains the benchmark for serious high-altitude åuse. It’s fully seam-sealed, extremely durable, and built for conditions where failure isn’t an option.

For trail running and fast-and-light hiking

GORE-TEX Paclite provides maximum protection at minimum weight and pack size. It’s ideal for light outdoor activity like trail running.

How to Choose GORE-TEX Footwear

GORE-TEX shoes are waterproof. The same membrane used in jackets is bonded around the inside of the upper, creating a sock-like waterproof layer that keeps water out. The membrane wraps around the foot and is seam-sealed at the joins, handling submersion up to ankle height without leaking.

The practical limit of GORE-TEX footwear is important too. If water enters over the top of the boot, the membrane can’t help. A low-cut GORE-TEX trail shoe handles trail running and light hiking in rainy conditions. A mid-cut or high boot extends that protection to deeper water crossings, scrambling, and multi-day routes.

For most hiking in the UK, a GORE-TEX mid-cut boot is the practical choice. It has enough ankle support and collar height for most terrain, without the weight of a high boot.

How to Choose GORE-TEX Trousers

GORE-TEX trousers are the piece of kit most often left out of an otherwise well-considered layering system. It’s also the one that makes the biggest difference when conditions get wet. A waterproof jacket over unprotected legs keeps your core dry while your legs soak through. On a long mountain day in driving rain, that gap matters.

The construction decision mirrors jackets: 2L for general hiking and everyday use and 3L for technical and high-output use. Most GORE-TEX trousers are designed to go on over base and mid layers quickly. Full-length side zips mean you can get them on and off without removing footwear. That sounds minor until you’re layering up in a changing wind on a ridgeline.

Look for articulated knees, a gusseted crotch, and reinforced ankle hems - and a pair that compresses small enough to make it into your pack.

Which GORE-TEX Gear Is Right for You?

The honest answer is that most people need less than they think - and spend more than they need to as a result. GORE-TEX Pro is built for professional alpinists and serious expedition use. For regular hiking, trail walking and everyday outdoor use, a 2L waterproof jacket paired with mid-cut GORE-TEX footwear will meet most users’ needs. Add trousers for long days in the mountains rather than day hikes from the car park.

The upgrade from 2L to 3L makes a noticeable difference if you push hard in bad weather regularly. Switch from 3L to Pro if you’re operating at the serious end of the activity spectrum.
