If you are facing extreme cold and sub-zero winter weather, a parka is your best defence. Parkas feature a longer cut that drops below the waist, blocking freezing winds and locking in body heat. They also typically feature rugged, weather-resistant outer shells and protective hoods. Puffer jackets offer incredible, lightweight warmth for their size and are perfect for active days, but parkas provide the ultimate total-body thermal coverage.
To find your perfect size, use our sizing guide for men's winter jackets. Measure the widest part of your chest with your arms relaxed at your sides. Most of our winter coats and parkas are pre-designed with a slightly relaxed fit to naturally accommodate winter layering. You generally do not need to size up unless you consistently wear exceptionally bulky hoodies or heavily insulated mid-layers underneath your daily outerwear.
While traditional wool coats look sharp and naturally resist mild weather, they are heavy and take a long time to dry if soaked. Modern synthetic insulation is significantly lighter and highly compressible, providing instant, cosy warmth. Synthetic jackets excel in wet winter conditions, retaining their heat even when damp and drying out much faster than heavy wool overcoats.
A premium technical rain jacket is built for active outdoor endurance and performance. The best men's waterproof jackets should feature fully sealed seams, underarm zip vents (pit zips) to quickly dump excess heat, and a fully adjustable hood that fits over a helmet. You should also look for adjustable Velcro cuffs and a cinch-cord hem to lock out freezing drafts and keep you comfortable on intense mountain treks.
Finding an ethical jacket is easy when you know what labels to look for. Check the product details for recycled nylon or polyester fabrics. For insulated coats, ensure the down is certified by the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), which guarantees animal welfare. Finally, look for PFAS-free waterproof materials. The North Face does not use PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in our waterproof products, ensuring you get excellent, legally compliant rain protection without releasing these harmful chemicals into our waterways.
