How do I choose between down and synthetic insulation in a men’s puffer jacket?
Down and synthetic insulation have their own respective advantages. Down prioritises maximum warmth-to-weight ratio and packability for cold, dry conditions. Goose down traps air efficiently to keep you warm without adding heavy bulk. Choose synthetic insulation if you need reliable warmth in wet or humid weather. Synthetic fibres retain their insulating power even when damp and dry quickly.
What is down fill power, and how warm is a 700-fill puffer jacket?
Fill power measures the loft or 'fluffiness' of down insulation. Higher numbers mean one ounce of down traps more air and provides greater warmth for its weight. A 700-fill power puffer jacket is considered to be a benchmark of very good down, as seen in our 1996 Retro Nuptse Jacket. It offers exceptional thermal insulation, remains extremely lightweight and compresses easily for packing. It is ideal for freezing winter temperatures, mountain excursions and everyday cold weather wear.
Are puffer jackets waterproof or water-resistant in heavy rain?
Most standard puffer jackets are water-resistant, not fully waterproof. They are crafted from durable ripstop nylon or polyester coated with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish that makes water bead up and shed off the surface. However, in continuous heavy rain, water can eventually soak through. For torrential downpours, pair your puffer with a waterproof hard shell layer or look for specialised seam-sealed coats with GORE-TEX® protection.
Men’s puffer jacket vs. parka: which is better for winter commuting and outdoor activities?
Choose a puffer jacket if you need lightweight warmth, convenient packability and freedom of movement for daily commuting and outdoor activities. Puffers feature a shorter, hip-length cut and lightweight fabrics. Choose a parka if you face extreme sub-zero winds or prolonged exposure outdoors. Parkas feature a longer thigh-length cut, heavier weather-resistant outer shells and often include insulated hoods for maximum coverage.
How do I wash a men’s down puffer jacket and restore its puffiness?
Down puffer jackets require periodic cleaning and special care to maintain their shape and feel. Follow our care instructions to safely wash your jacket at home and restore it to its original puffiness.
You can wash your down jacket in a front-loading washing machine on a gentle cycle with warm water and a mild powder detergent. Tumble dry over a long period using no heat and add tennis balls to the dryer to break up clumps and restore the jacket to its original loft and shape.
