What type of shoe you need depends on where you intend to wear it.  However, there are some common things to pay attention to when shopping for footwear no matter what activity you plan to wear it for.

Soles:  Choose a shoe with a sole that is appropriate for the expected conditions.  Walking shoes and running shoes are best for wear around town where sidewalks, asphalt, and grass are common terrain.  If you're heading off-road for some hiking or trail running, look for soles with larger lugs and tread patterns designed to increase grip.  Similarly, snow boot soles should have a pattern that helps reduce slipping.

Material:  If rain is in the forecast and may be an issue when you're outdoors, look for shoes made with waterproof materials such as Gore-Tex and FUTURELIGHT.  

Insulation:  Insulated shoes and boots are best for keeping your feet warm when it's cold outside.
