I previously owned a few pairs of the Hedgehogs which liked the fit and feel of a lot. I hiked in them regularly in the Lake Tahoe area but the rocks will wear your feet out. So I was psyched to try these with the thought of having more protection. I can tell you right now, the soles are definitely harder than the Hedghogs (which is what i wanted) so these are not as comfortable on pavement and hard floors. Outdoors they are great. I hiked Half Dome in them this week and have used them a few times hiking with a 30 lb pack (i.e. the baby) Here are my impressions:
1) The Vibram sole is great. Great grip and rigid. The heel strike is much stronger than the Hedgehog. It's not a hiking boot though, you can still feel features under foot.
2) The upper portion is nice. The soles so hard the upper really has to fit well, especially to give you that shoe feel.
3) Saw some video about how the Goretex keeps out dust. That was great on this trail. No gummy socks or rubbed toes. Stood in puddle, did not leak.
4) Not a lot of give. Maybe they'll stretch out, but not much give as your feet swell.
5) Fast feet! These are so light and have that tennis shoe feel that you can do some foot work, which is great when there are an absurd number of steps or just lots of big rocks and tree roots to step over. It adds up.
6) They're not boots! You can roll your ankle pretty quick. Poles are highly recommended when hiking with a load.

I've always liked the Hedghogs. I feel like these are lighter with a more rugged sole. I'll miss the comfort the Hedghogs had on hard floors day to day but for hikes in the rocky Sierras they're great.

Loved the shoes until the tread fell apart

The shoes were great until at around 3 months one of the tread landings became detached on the left shoe. 3 months later two of them detached from the right shoe.

Comments about TheNorthFace MEN’S ULTRA FASTPACK GTX:

Perhaps the perfect shoe, except for one thing. I have a slightly wide foot - an "E" width in dress shoes. Northface has not yet taken advantage of the market to serve people with wider feet like New Balance has. These shoes are slightly too tight for me. I tried a size larger in the store figuring extra length would offer a slight gain in width, but that is not the case. The fairly stiff sole is great for any type of walking and hiking, the uppers are incredible soft and cradle/support you foot - the perfect shoe for people with standard width feet, but a frustration for people with "E" or wider feet.

Comments about TheNorthFace MEN’S ULTRA FASTPACK GTX:

These shoes are everything claimed but so far have had some issues. Had to send back to Northface for warranty work as top eyelet came unattached, lace holder on tongue ripped and shoelace exploded. Northface has now had for about 6-7 weeks. I'm hoping to see these again before summer.

Out of the Box and Onto the Trail!

Comments about TheNorthFace MEN’S ULTRA FASTPACK GTX:

Man I love these shoes. I took the out of the box and went directly on the trail for 3 hours. The shoes did not need to be broken in and after 3 hours my feet were in perfect condition. I bought these for hiking and trail running and haven't been disappointed.

About sizing I own the Storm Waterfront at 11, and boots at 10.5. In Fastpack I wear a 10.5. These shoes tend to run a size larger.

About the waterproofing. On the first day I used them I ran into some rain and these shoes kept my socks dry even after an hour and half in the rain.

If you are looking for a versatile shoe for hiking, trail running, or road running you really can't go wrong with these shoes.

Comments about TheNorthFace MEN’S ULTRA FASTPACK GTX:

I bought the Ultra Fastpack GTX to go hiking in Arizona. Took it right out of the box and only needed a few days to break the shoe in. It worked great hiking in the desert over rocky terrain! Would buy this shoe again!

      Great!

Comments about TheNorthFace MEN’S ULTRA FASTPACK GTX:

I bought two pair, one for tromping around Cleveland in the winter for casual purposes (blue/grey) and another for actual trail use/running/gym (red/grey). This is my 3rd or fourth set of NF shoes with gore-tex. I am a fan and glad more people don't wear them and don't know how great they are because finding the color/size combination you want can be challenging due to limited production.

Comments about TheNorthFace MEN’S ULTRA FASTPACK GTX:

It took me about two weeks to break these shoes in. At first they were a little stiff and since they were built like a tank, I worried they would not mold to my feet- but they did. They are stiff and hard out of the box, but after that they are the best shoe North Face has made IMO. These shoes are solidly built and handle themselves well on all the different terrain I encounter on the trails. If you are thinking about getting them, do, trust me. Just give them some time to break in.

        Solid shoe

Comments about TheNorthFace MEN’S ULTRA FASTPACK GTX:

First, I normally wear a 10.5--these are a ten. So half a size difference. Could just be my foot, just be cautioned. Secondly, this shoe is solid. Gore-text protection keeps my feet dry. I have a pair of bean boots and these will be replacing them for wear in the rain. These exceeded my expectations. I wish I had a need for the higher top version.

Comments about TheNorthFace MEN’S ULTRA FASTPACK GTX:

Ordered these on cyber Monday and I wasnt dissapointed. They look great, waterproof, and have all the technologies you would come to expect from TNF. The only gripe I have is that it took a couple weeks to break them in and the lacing system leaves the toe end a little loose and the top end near the anke tight but after re-lacing them and breaking in they are better. I also have a narrow foot which could be a factor. I do like these shoes enough to buy a pair in a different colour. Well done TNF.
