    Comments about TheNorthFace VENGEANCE MITT:

This mitt has all the bells and whistles, and keeps the hands warm in an unconventional way. However, it is safe to say I would not be caught wearing these as my primary mitt for a multi-day expedition up and down an exposed peak. It does not come close to the level of insulation of my old mountaineering mitts, therefore it is not the oven of a mitt which I was expecting. What it is is a mitt focused on alpine performance. The mitt breathes very well, so that despite the lack of bulky insulation, my hands stay warm because they stay dry. It's obvious the goal here was a minimal design, as the leashes are just strong enough to do the job and there's no loop at the fingers to hang dry the mitts. My fingers easily get Raynaud's-like symptoms in cold conditions, and after many uses in single zero degree F weather and -25 wind chills, I can say these mitts keep my hands satisfactorily warm. If anything, I wish the shell was a little more roomy in the contoured thumb area, but if/when my thumb gets cold, I just move it to the fingers pocket. I've only used these for snowboarding so far, but I would think they'd be ideal for ice climbing as well, due to the excellent dexterity. Despite the performance, I still think the mitts are over-priced and should be just a touch warmer to be considered a mountaineering mitt, thus the four star rating.
