I got this bag as my work duffel since I work on Bering Sea fishing boats. I had a large backpack, but it couldn't fit everything I needed. Many of my coworkers recommended The North Face Base Camp duffels as the best ones for this job. The bags are collapsible, which is fantastic since I often have just a small locker for my gear. They're tall enough I can fit large compression sacks vertically and still put my boat shoes or a fleece on top. I've stuffed this bag full and can get about 70 lbs worth inside. Not that I should be walking around with that much in my bag, but it's nice to have that option when what is inside is what sustains you for three months. I've had my bag over two years now and use it most of the year. It has been craned, dragged, thrown, sat on, and kicked; been on countless planes and autos; and dealt with rain, snow, mud, gravel, etc., and yet it still is in like new condition. I got the black bag and put a long piece of duct tape on top to distinguish it as mine, so it's pretty easy to customize and spot coming down the luggage carousel. The side, top, and backpack handles create several grab points, which have come in handy numerous times on the airport carousel or in the back of a car when I've needed to grab it quickly and get out of the way.

I agree with another review that a pocket for paperwork would be nice, although I think that could potentially take away from its compressibility or the large, open interior. I thought the open interior would bother me as I'm one who always buys backpacks based on the number of pockets and ability to organize. However, I've had no problem organizing this bag with some compression sacks, ditty bags, and Ziplocs. Turns out it's a good thing there are no interior organizers or I wouldn't be able to fit what I needed.

I won't testify that they're totally waterproof; however, my bag has sat in a pile of snow with more snow and rain coming down on top of it for about an hour and I never had a problem with anything inside getting wet.

Since purchasing my bag I have encouraged more of my coworkers to invest in this duffel. They, too, have absolutely fallen in love with it.

Love this bag. Big, rugged, compression straps. Took it to Nepal last year for a month trek, survived the mule and a lot of tossing around.
But...this year went back to Nepal and ran into a typhoon, several rainy days. I and many others on this trek had the bag. Universally, we had flooding into the bag. Small storm, big storm. Didn't matter. A day on the mule in a drizzle and everything that wasn't double bagged and independently waterproof was soaked.
North Face-if you improved the zipper we would be good to go. Thus the 1 star rating. It is a great bag, until ...it is not. And when you are deep in the mountains and it is cold and rainy and everything is wet. well, we all wish you had paid more attention to the zipper....

NOT WATERPROOF and a pain to carry.

Comments about TheNorthFace BASE CAMP DUFFEL - XL:

I had such high hopes for this bag. I was so excited when I got it. I do a lot of traveling and thought it would be easier to use a NF Duffel and I honestly regret it every. single. time. The straps are completely useless. If you have even a little bit of weight you feel it on your shoulders. Its not meant to be carried, but even having to carry it short distances like an airport transfer or from the parking lot to your house/hotel the bag is a PAIN to carry. Actual physical pain and so much frustration.

Also-this bag is ABSOLUTELY NOT waterproof. I thought the point of making the bag with waterproof material was that it would be waterproof and could withstand a little water-let me be clear- it cant. Not even a little sprinkle rain. All the North Face had to do was make the zipper waterproof like the rest of the bag. I am currently on my 3rd load of laundry and drying everything out because I left it out during some light rain and everything got soaked. Actual puddles. I assumed it would be just the top of the bag where the rain comes in from the zipper but there were puddles at the bottom of my bag. I couldnt be more disappointed with this bag. North Face I expected so much more from your "technically advanced" gear.

I have 2 duffels which goes with me now on any travels. Space is not an issue and i can easily collapse one and place it inside another in case i need only one duffel. Sturdy and rainproof to apoint i cannot complain. Compression straps come in handy.

Comments about TheNorthFace BASE CAMP DUFFEL - XL:

I love my duffel, specially for trips where I'm not in the mood to pack up my sleeping bag and everything always fits in there. The material is good and waterproof and this bag has spent countless nights outside my tent in the middle of Iceland.
The only thing is that being an average woman (173 cm) I find it really hard to carry it on my back and if it's not stuffed full it's almost impossible (had to drag it through the streets of New York which the straps did NOT like) and that's why I'm considering getting a Large duffel. It should be easy to carry but still big enough if I pack everything neatly!

Love the idea of these bags. Have a medium, large and XL. Nice and light to travel with and room for everything. That comes with a catch though as they wear out pretty easy after a few trips through the airport. Definitely not waterproof. Last trip to tofino to surf I had the bag in the back of the truck while it was raining. I was hoping things would stay dry but they didn't. Would love to have a duffel that's actually waterproof.

I took this bag on an extended camping trip, and it was amazing! It got thrown off a roof rack on the highway, and is still barely scuffed up... I would buy this bag again! I happened to be on the beach, and even though it rained nearly every day my stuff was always kept dry inside!
