We have developed a plastic bag recycling program in conjunction with Terracycle
to divert 100% of our polybag packaging waste from landfill at our retail stores and headquarters.
Closed Loop Tote:
For this project, we took thousands of yards of scrap fabric and turned it into reusable tote-bags which are sold at our retail stores. One dollar from the sale of each bag sold goes to the Children and Nature Network
, an organization connecting children with nature.
Footwear: In 2008, we converted our footwear boxes to 75% post consumer recycled content and replaced the tissue paper with a recycled foot form that also doubled as a product info hangtag. The change resulted in saving the equivalent of 22,776 trees, the emissions of 181 cars, the energy to power 214 houses for a year and 24 Olympic swimming pools of water.
Hang Tags: The North Face converted all of its hangtags to 100% recycled content paper and vegetable based inks in 2008. This saved us 640 tons of wood, the equivalent of the energy to power 36 homes for a year and 4 Olympic swimming pools of water per year. This project resulted in a cost savings of $300,000.
