IMPORTANT COURSE INFOMRATION

The North Face Endurance Challenge on May 10 in Bellingham will be over never-been-run-before courses, taking place on a mix of public and private lands. Pre-running on the Blanchard and Chuckanut system is allowed and encouraged. These are the only areas where pre-scouting is allowed.

Prior to May 10, it is paramount that participants do not visit the course in sections where it falls on private land. Access to Camp Lutherwood and the other private entities involved has been graciously granted for the event date only. Visiting these areas (Start area to Aid Station 1 and then Aid Station 2) before May 10 is strictly prohibited and would be paramount to trespassing.

It is, also, especially important that any use of Roy Road by you or your crew/pacer, be it pre-race or during, is done so with respect to the residents of Roy Road. This is a small, lightly used road and even just mild additional traffic and parking will have an impact. Please be courteous and aware of how fast you drive, where you park, etc.

Course Description

Welcome to where the Cascade Mountains crash into the sea. This event’s technical course meanders its way amongst rock-climbing areas and bat caves, punctuated by what the course designer describes as "insane views of Mt. Baker" and the North Cascades to the east. The views of the San Juan Islands to the west, Canadian Rockies to the north, plus the vast Skagit Valley to the south are not half bad, either. Elevations bounce between 200 and 2,500 feet, but do not include any huge, sustained climbs. Rather, the course is always heading up or down. Traverses of broken ridgeline require nimble feet while highly technical sections demand mountain goat skills (there will be two roped sections to aid in a climb). Overall, an impressive trail-running test that delivers a balance of fire roads, single track, and double track.

50 Mile:

Start to Aid #1, 2.5 miles

Starting at Camp Lutherwood, runners will head out on a .2 mile gravel road section and dive directly into the camps extensive trail system with a .7 mile accent of fun, winding single track. There is a modest gain of 250 feet to the first section of logging roads. Runners follow a relatively flat 1 mile logging road, which turns straight and up a .6 mile long steep grade to Aid #1.

Aid #1 to Aid #2, 2.6 miles

Runners will head south along flat logging road and take the first right and for 1 mile run along an undulating, lightly used logging road. Runners will bear left at the Y and continue west along logging road. Runners will take a right onto a short section of trail followed by a left turn, continuing on the trail. Runners take a right back onto a logging road, bearing right at the next intersection. Road continues past pond then begins a steep road grade up to Aid #2.

Aid #2 to Aid #3, 6.5 miles

Runners will leave Aid #2 and head onto a flat and potentially very muddy trail for the first .2 miles, followed by an easy .2 mile rise to Overlander Trail. Runners will bear left onto the very rugged Overlander Trail. This trail is steep, muddy and technical for the first .8 miles followed by a .3 mile wet downhill, bearing right at the T intersection of the Lost Lake Trail. Follow this muddy and moderately downhill trail north for 1 mile to the North Lost Lake Trail. Bear left and follow this relatively flat and fast trail northward for 1.8 miles and turn right onto the Madrone Crest Trail. Climb this short single-track trail for .15 miles and bear left to continue along the Madrone Crest Trail. Follow this fast downhill corridor north for .5 miles and hang a right at the Salal Trail. Follow Salal Trail for .2 miles down and turn left onto the Hemlock Trail. Follow this wide and fast downhill grade north for 1.3 miles to Aid Station #3.

Aid #3 to Aid #4, 4.9 miles

Runners exit Aid #3 and backtrack the Hemlock Trail for .2 miles, then bear right and south onto the Lost Lake Trail. This roomy trail climbs for .3 miles then enters the new and amazing Hush Hush Trail. The Hush Hush winds and gradually climbs magnificently through the forest for 1.3 miles. Runners take a right onto the Salal Trail and follow for .2 miles and drop down to the Lost Lake Trail. Bear right, and then make an immediate left onto the Lower Ridge Trail. The Lower Ridge Trail climbs for the first .5 miles and then undulates along a very rugged and steep sided single track trail. This trail literally keeps runners hanging on the edge of an amazing razor ridge with numerous stunning views of the North Cascades and Mt. Baker to the east. The Ridge Trail undulates south for 3 miles of very technical trail with numerous accents/descents. Be very cautious on this trail. Pass southern trailhead and run onto Cleator Road up the hill .2 miles to the summit at Aid #4.

Aid #4 to Aid #5, 4.7 miles

Runners leave Aid #4 and dive directly down the 1 mile, demanding Double Diamond Trail. Runners lose 750 vertical feet on this trail, and then bear right onto Fragrance Lake Road. This wide trail climbs slightly back up to Cleator Road. Runners bear left onto Cleator for .5 miles of well-packed dirt road, and then continue with a drop 1.5 miles of this wide dirt road to the Two Dollar Trail Trailhead and Aid Station #5.

Aid #5 to Aid #6, 4 miles

Runners head south, up the likely-to-be muddy Two Dollar Trail and climb for the first .5 miles. The trail gradually undulates until runners reach Fragrance Lake. Runners follow the trail around Fragrance Lake then drop down the fun and technical Fragrance Lake Trail for 1.8 miles to the Interurban Trail. Runners bear left onto this flat wide trail for .2 miles, then turn left past the pond, then right onto the Fragrance Lake Road for .2 miles to Aid #6.

Aid #6 to Aid #7, 4.8 miles

Runners leave Aid #6, backtrack up Fragrance Lake Road and continue to climb up this wide gradual trail for 2.1 miles. Runners bear right onto South Lost Lake Trail and keep climbing for another .7 miles on this wide but muddy trail. The trail turns gradually down for .5 miles, and then runners bear right onto the Overlander Trail. Runners will be familiar with this trail as they head to Aid #7 (which also served as Aid #2). This is a technical, muddy 1.1 mile trail with many roots, rocks, mud holes and challenges. Runners bear right and follow trail .2 miles back down past the pond. It’s .2 miles flat trail to Aid #7.

Aid #7 to Aid #8, 2.6 miles

Runners again should be familiar with this run to Aid #8 (which also served as Aid #1). Runners begin with a steep logging road descent, before runners pass through a short trail section, and then join logging road back to Aid #8.

Aid #8 to #9, 4.4 miles

Runners leave along logging roads from Aid #8 and climb towards Road B1000. Runners bear left onto a short .1 mile trail section, then east onto B1000, then bear right onto Road B1500. Road B1500 gradually climbs and bears right up to its end. The trail drops down, crosses a creek then left onto a newly reconstituted trail. This trail climbs south .3 miles then heads down .15 miles to intersect the British Army Trail. Runners bear left, cross a creek, bear right, then follows trail back to and then along Lizard Lake. Runners pass by Lizard Lake, then bear left down the Alternative Incline Trail. Alternative Incline Trail drops 720 feet in 1.1 miles to Road B1000. Runners turn right and follow B1000 for 1 mile on a gradual descent to Aid #9.

Aid #9 to Aid #10, 5.4 miles

Runners leave Aid #9 along Road B1000 for .1 miles then bear right onto Lily Lake Trail. Runners traverse the first mile along a gradual, and potentially muddy first section. The Lily Lake Trail hairpins right and climbs 1.5 miles and 900 vertical feet, then left onto the Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT). Runners follow this flat section of the PNT for .4 miles then bear left and down the PNT/Max’s Shortcut Trail. This fun, fast trail starts relatively flat then drops 700 feet over 2.3 miles, crosses Road B2000 and deposits runners at the stunning Aid #10. It sits atop a local hang gliding hot-spot with stunning views of the Cascades, the Olympics, San Juan Islands, and Vancouver Island.

Aid #10 to Aid #11, 4.7 miles

Runners head north out of Aid #10 and enter the most rugged, technical trail of the course. The first .4 miles drop gradually, but technically, along the PNT trail. It turns up along the Samish Bay Connector Trail and climbs 800 vertical feet over 1 mile, over technical roots, rocks, and scrambling trails. (This trail passes by two local hot spots worth adventuring to on another day of the infamous ‘Bat Caves’ and then the Rock Trail that brings hikers to the impressive high point on Blanchard Mountain known as Oyster Dome at 2075 ft.). Runners continue to follow the Samish Connector Trail, which becomes pretty muddy, and bears left onto the Lily/Lizard Connector, past Lily Lake. Trail becomes rugged and drops down to Lizard Lake and follows the PNT past Lizard Lake on onto and down the PNT/British Army Trail. This section drops 600 feet over 1 mile along a fun, speedy trail. Runners turn right onto logging road then head down past Road B100 back to Aid #11.
