We eliminated over 50,000 lbs. of petroleum-based materials in 2011
Using castor oil as an alternative to petroleum-derived materials
For our Spring 2011 product line, The North Face redesigned the popular Venture line to incorporate environmentally preferred materials. The highly technical best-selling rainwear line now incorporates castor oil into its membrane as an alternative to unsustainable petroleum-derived materials. This project exemplifies our goal of innovating into sustainability.
The newly redesigned Venture Jacket, Side Zip Pant, Pant and Venture Parka are now crafted of HyVent DT EC, which uses natural castor oil from beans to reduce the use of synthetic components in the waterproof membrane by 50% compared to conventional fabric waterproof membranes. Each new Venture Jacket will contain 28 grams of standard waterproof coating, 50% of which will be castor oil-based. This will eliminate more than 50,000 pounds of petroleum-based materials in 2011 alone.
