Bio:

Upon meeting the diminutive Stacy Thomas, the first impression is “dang, that’s a strong handshake!” Off course, that’s off the mountain. On the mountain, the first thought many people have is “how did she do that?”

Stacy, 22, is a regular fixture on Washington’s Snoqualmie Pass, her home terrain just one hour outside the city. “That’s pretty much where I live during the season,” she says. While she excels inbounds (witness her past comp wins), her true love involves exploring where few others go. “Lately, I’m much more of a backcountry rider,” she admits, “I like hitting natural kickers, taking pillow lines, really anything back there.”

Like so many snowboarders, Stacy evolved from skis. “I started skiing when I was three years old,” she explains. “Then my cousin took me out for a snowboarding lesson when I was six and that got me thinking about it.” Today, Stacy gives small, private snowboarding lessons on her home mountain, Alpenthal. “It’s very cool to see how excited the kids get … it brings back all the excitement I felt when I was learning … I get so stoked about it.”

Stacy may be a steely, hardcore competitor on the snowboard circuit, but she is also very quick with a smile and impressively even keeled. Several top finishes at national and international competitions have not distracted her from the deeply-rooted things she loves about her sport: “powder days, backcountry, and anytime it’s sunny, because we don’t have many sunny says in Washington.”

And what makes her smile when she’s not snowboarding? “Hanging out with my family, camping under the stars, and playing with Powder, my yellow Lab.”
